10 Beginner Decoupage Mistakes to Avoid

Like any new craft, there are a few common mistakes beginners make. The good news? They’re easy to avoid!
1. Skipping Surface Preparation
A clean surface is the foundation of a beautiful project. Remove dust, dirt, wax, and grease before you begin. If your surface is glossy, give it a light sanding so your products have something to grip.
2. Using Too Much Adhesive
More glue doesn’t mean better results. Applying too much adhesive can lead to wrinkles, bubbling, and longer drying times. A thin, even coat works best.
3. Rushing the Drying Process
Patience really does pay off! Let each layer dry completely before adding another coat or moving on to the next step. This helps prevent tearing, lifting, and unwanted wrinkles.
4. Starting with a Complicated Project
Choose something small for your first project. A picture frame, tray, small sign, or decorative box is the perfect way to build confidence before tackling larger furniture pieces.
